Racheal teaches both beginners and advanced players of all ages, in groups and individually. She has taught recorder at Preshil Alternative School (Vic.), North Fitzroy Primary School (Vic.), University High School (Vic.), and St Paul's Grammar School (NSW). She has conducted workshops for all ages and abilities for various organisations and events including the Music Education Unit of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Sydney Society of Recorder Players, the Victorian Recorder Guild, the St. Louis Recorder Society (USA), Music Centre North Queensland in Townsville, and for the 2005 Steps in Time: Dance, Movement and the Recorder Festival . Racheal can teach on both Baroque (descant and treble) and Ganassi style recorders. An important technique that Racheal has been developing is the use of in-tune dynamics on the recorder. This is an integral part of her teaching she has developed many exercises to learn this easily and incorporate it musically into compositions. The ability to learn music by ear, memorise it, and improvise upon it is an important part of the learning process and a challenge for many recorder players, an equal partner to this is developing good music reading skills. Racheal's workshops and private classes address these elements in the context of a varied repertoire, ensemble work, improvisation exercises, and technical work.
Racheal has a diploma in Shiatsu and Oriental therapies, centred on massage and body work This has helped her to gain a good understanding of playing the recorder in positions comfortable for the body, with less stress on areas that may be prone to problems like Repetitive Strain Injury. This includes a finger technique based on as little extraneous movement as possible and relaxed arms and shoulders to prevent any tension on wrist, elbow or shoulder. She has developed a series of exercises to develop a strong, natural breath flow and control that places the centre in the belly and down away from the upper body. Racheal's teaching of advanced students is inspired by and developed around modal melodic traditions from Greece, Turkey, and Iran. Racheal has spent over 12 years researching, performing and studying these modal traditions, and developing techniques and approaches for adapting these styles to the recorder. This music presents many challenges for the recorder player, such as the use of quarter tones, appropriate phrasing and ornamentations, and imitation of the timbral qualities of the instruments that have grown within these traditions.
