The Canberra Times, Classical CD reviews
Making Rain While the Sun Is Shining by W.L. Hoffman A pleasing aspect of the local music scene over the past few years has been the increasing number of CDs being released which feature Australian artists and composers.
Move Records has been in the forefront of this burgeoning local industry, and this new release brings to prominence the young Melbourne guitarist and composer, Mark Viggiani, in a disc which not only showcases his brilliant playing but also displays his inventive approach to sound combinations in these elegant and original compositions.
All 14 tracks are his compositions, in which he is joined by a percussionist, a violinist, and a recorder player.
The matching of vibraphone and guitar on some pieces, including the title track The Rainmaker, is as attractive as it is unusual, while the combination of violin, recorder and guitar on the piece Copal is unique in its matching of classical, jazz and Middle Eastern folk elements.
This is an impressive debut disc which provides very attractive and musically rewarding performances.
